It’s very tempting to scroll through Instagram or Facebook before getting some much-needed beauty sleep. Unfortunately, this habit is causing some serious damage to your body. We found out how to stop the harsh side-effects of late night social media wandering.
Germs
‘Your iPhone’s dirtier than a toilet’ declares USA Today. (Now that is a horrifying statistic…) We use our phones prior to applying face make-up and a full-body moisturizer. Imagine how fast nasty germs spread all over our bodies. How do we protect ourselves from our phones? After a long day, come home and give your device a quick cleanse. Light Has a Dark Side
It’s amazing how even on the sunniest of days, we are able to see the screen of our smartphones. This is due to the emission of bright blue light. At night time, this blue light tricks our brains into thinking it is still light out. In turn, our body produces less melatonin, making it harder to fall asleep. How do you get your phone light to shift with the brightness of the sun? Go into you iPhone Settings > Display & Brightness > Night Shift > Scheduled > From > Sunset to Sunrise. What does that do? When the sun sets, our phone stops emitting sleep-preventing blue light, and it will re-start when the sun comes up.
Lower Quality of Sleep
Not only does blue light make it harder to fall asleep, but it restricts the quality of sleep. Research reveals that using our phones after lights out disturbs our natural sleep patterns causing insomnia, fatigue, daytime dysfunction, and shortens the hours of beauty sleep. Basically, using our smart phones before bed causes some serious sleep problems. Plug your phone in on the other side of the bedroom, making it impossible to scroll through your news feed from the comfort of your duvet. Use this time for meditation, reflection, or reading a good book (we love nighttime meditation!).
Harmful Radiation
Cell phones emit electromagnetic radiation, that’s how we’re able to do basically everything on those little devices. The International Agency for Research on Cancer declares that “we need to keep a close watch for a link between cell phones and cancer risk.” It is believed that continuous exposure to radiation causes cancer. So how do we limit this exposure? We’ll teach you how to cut this time in half.
